Exactly how much sleep you should be getting every night will depend very much on both your age and your state of health. However sleep is not only a question of the time that you spend sleeping, but is also a question of the quality of that sleep. Accordingly, if you are getting enough of sleep and are still waking up every morning feeling tired and going through the day unable to fully concentrate, and perhaps being a bit ill-tempered, then there is a very good chance that you are not getting enough deep sleep and might very well be suffering from insomnia.
As far as age is concerned, newborn babies obviously need the greatest amount of sleep and will frequently sleep in cycles of about four hours, waking up when it is time to eat. Typically, a newborn baby needs between fourteen and sixteen hours sleep every day.
Once babies reach the age of approximately four to six months they should be sleeping right through the night and will begin to spend longer periods awake during the day when they will start to take a greater interest in what is going on around them and begin to play. At this point their requirementneed for sleep will drop slightly, although they will still need anywhere from about ten to fourteen hours sleep each day.
Surprisingly enough older children and even teenage children should also be getting the same amount of sleep and ten hours sleep each day for children is not a bad figure to aim for.
For a long time it has been said that children, and especially teenagers, who sleep for more than about eight hours a day are just lazy, but this is in fact not true. Bearing in mind the level of activity that most children are involved in every day, both at school as well as in their spare time, and the fact that their bodies are changing very rapidly, there is a very real requirement for more than the traditional eight hours sleep if they are to be given the best possible conditions for development.
For most adults in the region of eight to eight and a half hours sleep each night is just about right and should be sufficient to permit the body to recharge its batteries and see you up and about, alert and refreshed each morning.
Yet another myth is that the older we are the more sleep we need. Once again this is not true, unless you also are suffering from accompanying health problems, in which case additional sleep could be needed. A tendency for older peple to nap during the day is frequently taken as a signal that they need more sleep but in fact the daytime nap is normally offset by less sleep during the night.
One exception in the case of adults is that of pregnant women, who should usually increase their sleep during this time by approximately two or three hours.
The test of whether you are getting enough sleep is a fairly simple one and involves merely deciding whether you feel refreshed when you get up in the morning and can to function normally and focus your attention on the tasks at hand during the day. Should you find yourself unable to focus or doze off during the day then it is likely that you are not getting enough sleep.
Missing out on the odd few hours of sleep here and there will not do you any harm but if you find that you are regularly falling short on sleep then this can have serious consequences. We all suffer from insomnia occasionally, but insomnia that continues for more than about a month or six weeks will have a marked affect on your health and general quality of life.
