Sleep apnea is a very commonly seen sleep disorder that affects more than twelve million Americans and today is as common as adult diabetes.

The most common form of sleep apnea is obstructive sleep apnea which, as the name implies, results from an obstruction to your airways that produces problems with breathing. Additionally, there is another form of sleep apnea known as central sleep apnea, in which your brain does not adequately control breathing during sleep. A significant number of people suffer from mixed sleep apnea, which is a mixture of both obstructive and central forms of this sleep disorder.

The symptoms of sleep apnea may arise at any time and, although they are most frequently seen in overweight men over forty, they may be seen in both men and women of all ages and are increasingly being seen today in children.

The most obvious symptom of sleep apnea is snoring which is of course a difficult symptom to spot yourself and usually has got to be pointed out by your sleeping partner. Snoring has a variety of causes and snoring is not by itself a sign that you are suffering from sleep apnea. Most sleep apnea sufferers do snore.

The second most obvious sleep apnea symptom is unusual daytime tiredness. When you suffer from sleep apnea you stop breathing many times throughout the night and your body's instinctive reaction to this is to arouse you just enough for you to begin breathing again, but not sufficiently for you to be aware of the fact that you are being awakened. The result of this is that your sleep is continually interrupted and extremely light and you do not get the deep sleep that the body needs to recharge its batteries. As a result, in time, you find that you are becoming ever more tired during the day.

If sleep apnea is left untreated its affects will begin to become increasingly evident and additional symptoms will begin to appear. These might include headaches (particularly early in the morning), bad temper and perhaps depression. You might also notice that you are starting to gain weight.

One less obvious symptom of sleep apnea is increased blood pressure which can result in a variety of cardiovascular problems. This will be picked up if you are one of the growing number of individuals who now monitor their own blood pressure regularly at home but might not otherwise be detected until you call in for a routine physical exam at your physician's office.

Yet another increasingly seen symptom is that of learning difficulties and difficultues with memory. Again this is not easy to spot yourself but family and friends might well notice that you are no longer as quick on the uptake as you once were.

A few sleep apnea sufferers will notice a fall in sexual function and this could ultimately result in impotency.

As is the case with with the majority of conditions individual symptoms by themselves could be a sign of almost anything. However, when you begin to notice these symptoms alongside each onther then you should consider talking to your doctor and possibly think about having yourself tested for sleep apnea.

One word of warning though. Sleep apnea testing will usually mean referral to a sleep specialist, preferably a specialist certified by the American Board of Sleep Medicine (ABSM), and could mean undergoing overnight sleep testing either at home or in a specialized sleep laboratory. These tests will frequently cost more than $1,000 and you may wish to check with your insurer before you commit yourself to any program of sleep apnea testing.
